July the 15th, 2026 – Croatian scientists who built successful careers abroad before returning to Croatia have launched an international summer school in Dubrovnik.
After building highly successful academic careers abroad, Index reports that two Croatian scientists have returned home with a mission to put Dubrovnik on the map as a centre for cutting-edge scientific collaboration by bringing together young researchers from across Europe.
Married couple Dr. Tomislav Friščić, one of the world’s leading chemists, and Dr. Ivana Đilović, an expert in materials chemistry, have launched a new international summer school in Dubrovnik that will connect early-career scientists with some of Europe’s most distinguished researchers. The initiative aims to create opportunities for collaboration while strengthening Croatia’s position in global scientific research.
Friščić spent years working at leading universities in the United Kingdom and Canada, earning international recognition for pioneering research in mechano-chemistry, a field that develops more environmentally friendly methods of producing chemicals. Rather than remaining abroad, the couple chose to return to Croatia and continue their work from Dubrovnik.
Their new programme will bring dozens of young scientists from across Europe to the southern Croatian city for lectures, workshops and networking with internationally recognised experts. The organisers hope the school will become a regular event that helps build lasting research partnerships and encourages talented young researchers to pursue careers in science.
According to the organisers, Dubrovnik offers an ideal setting for scientific exchange, combining a rich academic tradition with an international reputation that makes it attractive to participants from around the world. Beyond showcasing Croatian science, the initiative is also intended to inspire young researchers by giving them direct access to leading experts in their fields.
The project reflects a broader trend of Croatian scientists returning from successful international careers to establish research and educational initiatives at home. By attracting talented students and researchers from across Europe, the organisers hope the summer school will help position Dubrovnik as an emerging hub for scientific innovation and international collaboration.
