Ukrainian cartoonist Igor Lukyanchenko won the first prize at this year’s International Cartoon Exhibition ‘Zagreb’. The theme of the exhibition on display at Klovićevi Dvori is ‘Hotels, Hostels, Apartments and Camps.’
The theme of the 22nd edition of the Croatian Cartoon Society’s exhibition was selected in view of the recent tourism boom in Croatia. As the number of tourists grows, so do the accommodation capacity needs, from popular resorts and hostels to tiny private rooms, so the cartoonists have tackled the ridiculous, and sometimes tragicomic, side of the tourist season.
Ninety works out of 600, submitted by 250 cartoonists from 55 countries, are currently on display. The biggest part of submitted works came from Croatia, Serbia, Romania, Ukraine, China, and Turkey.
The jury, featuring art historians Frano Dulibić and Sonja Švec Španjol, and cartoonists Darijana Gotal Sokolović, Josip Kovačević and Milan Lekić, has selected the authors whose cartoons depicted tourism adventures and misadventures best. The first prize went to Igor Lukyanchenko (Ukraine) for his cartoon of tourists leaving their ‘all inclusive’ hotels with extra luggage – enormous stomachs as a result of everything they ate during their stay.
