Strong bura winds are hampering efforts to contain the blaze in Dalmatia on June 18, 2017.
A major fire broke out close to Podgora last night, with some 200 firefighters and 100 vehicles dispatched to tackle the blaze. As a precaution, tourists in Podgara were evacuated, and while the fire has been contained there, it has now spread to Biokovo National Park.
Strong bura winds are enabling the fire to spread and making the fire-fighting task even harder. Three Canadair fire-fighting aircraft are also battling the blaze. More photos and video on Index.hr.
Roads have been closed as a result. The current status, according to the official HAK website, at 11:15 is this:
Due to fire all traffic is closed on the DC512 Makarska-Vrgorac state road, on the DC8 Adriatic road Tučepi-Podgora traffic is proceeding in one lane only.

Fires are sadly a not uncommon part of summers in Dalmatia, with many people started by human carelessness, often with devastating effect.
