June the 15th, 2025 – A brand new Zagreb-Ljubljana-Pula train route has been launched. It’s the first train line to operate along this line in over 30 years.
As Poslovni Dnevnik writes, cooperation between HŽ Passenger Transport and Slovenian Railways will see a brand new direct railway route introduced from June the 20th until the end of the current timetable on December the 13th, 2025. The new Zagreb-Ljubljana-Pula train route will likely delight many, and there will be other new lines to come in the future, HŽ Passenger Transport revealed.
This is otherwise the first direct railway connection on the Zagreb-Ljubljana-Pula train route in more than 30 years. The train will depart from Zagreb via Ljubljana to Pula every Friday, and will return to Ljubljana and Zagreb on Sundays.
The three cities will be connected by a modern low-floor train under the ownership of Slovenian Railways. The train is fully adapted for people in wheelchairs, has spaces for bicycles and pushchairs, and is equipped with both WiFi and a modern passenger information system. The train boasts 171 seats and can reach speeds of up to 140 km/h.
In addition to the existing six trains that connect Zagreb and Ljubljana daily, two more lines will be introduced from June the 20th, connecting Zagreb and Ljubljana on Fridays and Sundays.
From the June 21st, two additional trains will connect Pula and Divača (a location in southwestern Slovenia) on Saturdays, and from June the 28th to August the 31st, four seasonal border trains will run between Buzet and Divača.
The introduction of this new route and the other planned ones into service will improve regional connectivity and encourage sustainable mobility. It has been added that the ticket prices for these lines will be affordable.
Croatia has been the butt of slow and poor train journeys for several decades now, but with new routes being introduced and huge investments in the railway system, that looks set to change for good.
