China to Invest in Croatian Railways?

ZAGREB, July 10, 2018 – Croatian President Kolinda Grabar-Kitarović on Monday received a delegation of the China Railway Group Limited company, headed by CEO Zhang Zongyan, who said the Chinese company was interested in taking part in tenders for future large infrastructure projects in Croatia, for example the project aimed at modernising the Rijeka-Zagreb-Budapest railway line, the Office of the Croatian President said in a press release.

According to the press release, the president said that Croatia continued to attach great importance to the strengthening of cooperation with the People’s Republic of China in all areas of common interest, notably the economy, culture and science. She announced numerous infrastructure projects Croatia planned to carry out in the coming period and invited Chinese investors to take part in tenders for the said projects.

Zhang expressed satisfaction with the level of professionalism in the selection of contractors at the international bid for the upgrade of the Zaprešić-Zabok railway line in which his company took part, the press release said.

China Railway Limited was one of the seven bidders for reconstruction work at the 24-kilometre-long Zaprešić-Zabok railway line and it offered to perform reconstruction for 760.6 million kuna, exclusive of VAT.

HŽ Infrastruktura railway maintenance company selected the Swietelsky company from Zagreb and signed a 530.7 million kuna agreement on a project to upgrade and electrify the Zaprešić-Zabok railway line, which is expected to significantly increase the speed of travel along that section.

The total value of the project is 614.4 million kuna, 85% of which will come from EU funds.
