Croatian Motorways Break New Revenue Records

With more tourists and higher tolls, the revenues are greater than ever.

The traffic on motorways operated by the Croatian Motorways (HAC) public company over the past weekend grew by 0.4 percent compared to the comparable weekend last year, with the tolls revenue growth of 13.4 percent. On the Rijeka – Zagreb motorway, which is managed by a separate company, the income grew by 11.7 percent, reports tportal.hr o August 22, 2017.

On the motorways within the jurisdiction of the HAC, 640,634 vehicles were recorded last weekend, and the total tolls in the amount of 35.8 million plus VAT were collected, announced the public company on Monday.

In the comparable weekend last year, there were 637,867 vehicles, while the total collected tolls were 31.5 million kunas without VAT. Thus, the vehicle traffic grew by 0.4 percent, while the toll revenue was 13.4 percent higher compared to the same weekend last year.

According to data from the Rijeka-Zagreb Motorway (ARZ) public company, on the motorways managed by this concessionaire, as well as the Krk Bridge, 328,688 vehicles were recorded from 18 to 20 August. The total tolls collected stood at 19.6 million kunas plus VAT.

In the comparable weekend last year (19 to 21 August), there was a total of 332,787 vehicles, and the total tolls were charged in the amount of 17.6 million kunas plus VAT. This means that the number of vehicles actually decreased by 1.2 percent, while toll revenue increased by 11.7 percent.

So, the double-digit increases in toll revenues collected on motorways operated by HAC and ARZ continued. The main reason is clear: tolls were raised earlier this year and, additionally, starting from this year the new summer season surcharges were introduced, which means that drivers have to pay 10 percent higher toll rates than in other parts of the year. The period of additionally higher tolls started on 1 July and will last until 30 September.

According to data from the Zagreb-Macelj Motorway company, which manages the motorway from Zagreb to the Slovenian border, the third weekend in August brought to its motorway 106,438 vehicles, down from a comparable weekend last year by 6,612 vehicles, or 5.8 percent.

On the Istrian motorway system, 160,775 vehicles were recorded in the period from 18 to 20 August, which is 2.2 percent more than in the comparable weekend of 2016, according to Bina Istra.

The motorways within the jurisdiction of this concessionaire had the highest number of vehicles on Saturday (59,298), which is 2.4 percent more than on a comparable day last year.
