Petrinja Earthquake Victims Finally Moving Out of Containers 3+ Years On

August 23, 2023 – By the end of August, it is expected that all the Petrinja earthquake victims who have been using container settlements in Petrinja will be moved to more suitable and comfortable apartments. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Construction Branko Bačić announced that yesterday during a tour of the Petrinja construction sites.

As Index writes, the minister encouraged the remaining users of the hundred or so containers not to hesitate to enter the renovated apartments. They will be using those until the renovation of their own living spaces is completed.

Bačić expressed his satisfaction with the dynamics of the renovation and announced that 975 public procurement tenders for the renovation of residential premises will soon be announced.

“I am using the opportunity to invite all Croatian builders to come forward and get involved in the reconstruction. Our goal is to restore buildings as quickly as possible after the Zagreb and Petrinja earthquake. By moving out the users of container settlements, part of these spaces could be used for the installation of high-energy mobile wooden houses, the procurement of which is already underway,” Bačić said.

He added that one of the 11 housing care models for victims of the Petrinja earthquake is accommodation in multi-apartment buildings. Eight of such, with 125 apartments, are about to be completed in Petrinja.

Before the tour of the construction site, Bačić held a meeting with representatives of the City of Petrinja, where all ongoing investments in the area of were considered.

Works on The Primary School Underway

The renovation of the city center with 67 buildings and family houses in the historic city center has been entrusted to the City. The Ministry will help to speed up the dynamics of the works, he said. The continuation of work on the construction of the building of the First Primary School in Petrinja was also agreed upon in cooperation with the Hungarian government, the Ministry of Science and the City of Petrinja.

Renovation of private buildings in Petrinja is underway on 270 construction sites. Some of them are in a high stage of completion, and about fifteen of them will be completed in a week or two. Procurement for 422 construction sites is underway, and next week new ones will be announced.

The mayor of Petrinja, Magdalena Komes, added that yesterday at the session of the City Council, a decision was unanimously adopted on the transfer of funds for the completion of the construction of the First Primary School. “We are happy that our pupils will start the second semester of the new school year in a new school,” said Komes.

After a working meeting in Strašnik, not far from Petrinja, the minister visited the almost finished replacement house of the Marinović family. Construction work on the house with 55 square meters of living space has been completed. Ivan Marinović says that he is satisfied with the work that he personally supervised on a daily basis.

The minister also visited the construction site of eight apartment buildings with 128 apartments. They are part of two projects with four buildings each. The contracted value of one project is 6.1 million euros, and the other is 7.3 million euros. They are financed by the Competitiveness and Cohesion Operational Program. All that is left now are minor interior works and landscaping.

Eight more multi-apartment buildings are under construction in the Sisak-Moslavina County, and there are plans for a total of 36 such buildings.
