The border crossing was closed for a few hours on Wednesday night.
After the Batina border crossing with Serbia was closed last night, Croatian police confirmed today that a fence is being constructed there, reports Večernji List on June 30, 2016.
“We can only say that a fence is being constructed at the Batina border crossing, and the border crossing was therefore closed on Wednesday evening”, announced the Osijek-Baranja Police Department. The police did not comment on claims that the decision was caused by rumours that hundreds of refugees had arrived to the other side of the border.
The fence is expected to be finished this afternoon, and traffic has been normalized since Wednesday evening. The fence that is being constructed on the border between Croatia and Serbia is not a wire fence, but is made of metal plates over two metres in height. It is being constructed on the Croatian side of the Batina Bridge. No one is allowed to stop on the bridge, but the traffic is now running normally.
As soon as the crossing was closed last night, rumours started circulating that a fence is being constructed. During the first refugee wave, a fence was built at the Baranjsko Petrovo Selo border crossing, but on the Hungarian side. If it is confirmed that the fence is being constructed due to refugees, it will be the first time that Croatia has constructed such a fence.
According to information, since last night the Hungarian side of the nearby border is being patrolled by army with weapons.
As for the Vukovar-Srijem Police Department, border fence is not being constructed at the border crossings covered by that police department.
