August 11, 2024 – Croatia lost to Serbia in the Olympic water polo gold medal match on Sunday and has taken home the silver medal.

Croatia and Serbia met in the Olympic gold medal match in Paris today, which finished 11-13 for Serbia. While it was a close game, Croatia didn’t have it today, and Serbia capitalized on their opportunities to take home the gold.

These two national teams have already met once in the final of the Olympic Games. Serbia was better in 2016 and that silver medal is also Croatia’s last Olympic water polo medal, while Serbia defended their gold from Tokyo.

Going into today’s game, Croatia was better than Serbia head-to-head, given that they had won four of the last five games, including this year’s quarter-finals of the World Championships.

Croatia and Serbia reached the final even though they finished fourth in their group. Croatia lost to Italy and the USA, and in the knockout phase, they beat Spain and Hungary. Hungary beat Serbia in the group stage, though they went on to beat Greece and the USA in the knockout phase.

Well done to Croatia on an excellent tournament and a new Olympic silver medal!
