Croatian Domination: Modrić and Kovačić in Champions League Final, Lovren On His Way

Daniela Rogulj

Will Lovren be the third Croat to play in the Champions League final in Kiev?

Croatian national team members Luka Modrić and Mateo Kovačić will be fighting for the title of European Champions this season, which has been in their proud possession for the last two years. Last season, the duo managed to upset Mario Mandžukić in Cardiff, when Real Madrid knocked out Juventus (4:1). On May 26th, the Madrid Croats could face Liverpool’s Dejan Lovren as their opponent in Kiev, which is likely since Liverpool defeated Roma 5:2 in the first leg. Lovren and Co. will play in Rome tonight to hopefully finish off the job, reports Index.hr on May 1, 2018.

Modrić will hunt his fourth Champions League title next month. The former Dinamo player began collecting the championship titles in 2014 against Atletico Madrid in Lisbon (4:1 after extra time). Real Madrid played against their city rivals in the final again in 2016 in Milan where Real celebrated in penalties (5:3), and the last championship title won was in last year’s victory against Juventus.

The Croatian captain played in all three finals and was one of Real Madrid’s top players. So far he has won a total of 13 trophies in Madrid over his six seasons at the club. The Croatian duo will try to win the title for the third consecutive year.

On the other hand, Mateo Kovačić always takes advantage of the opportunity Zinedine Zidane gives him. In the final against Atletico, Kova did not play but was in the stands, and in the victory over Juventus in Wales, Mateo watched from the bench. Although Kova has won the Champions League twice, he certainly hopes for luck a third time and to lock in some minutes in Kiev. Perhaps Zidane will start the Croat from the first minute as he did last night against Bayern?

The other former jewel of Dinamo has so far won eight trophies with Madrid. Tonight we wait and see if Lovren makes it three.
