An incredible result for a Croatian runner at one of the largest sporting events in the world!

Daniel Daly, a Peruvian of Croatian roots, achieved a fantastic result at the Boston Marathon on Monday, securing 11th place out of a total of 30,000 runners from around the world, reports Index.hr on April 17, 2018.

Though Daly is a native of Peru, his mother is Croatian from Dubrovnik, resulting in the runner’s choice to compete in the famous marathon wearing Croatian colors. At 32 years old, Daly’s personal best marathon record is 2:20:24. At the Boston Marathon, which was performed in poor weather conditions, Daly achieved 2:27:54.

“I always wanted to represent Croatia, and even in 2016 at the World Championship for half marathons, I ran for Croatia, but for all of 2017 I was injured, and this is actually my first race after two years,” Daly told 3sporta.com. This summer, the runner will also make a trip to Croatia

“I run under the Croatian flag because I have Croatian citizenship on my mother’s side. Her family is from Dubrovnik and we are going this summer,” Daly concluded.

The Boston Marathon has been held since 1987, inspired by the marathon race at the first modern Olympics Games of the previous year, making it the oldest marathon race in the world. Each year, around 30,000 runners take part in the marathon, and over 500,000 spectators watch the run from the streets, which is considered to be one of the most significant sporting events in the United States and the world.

The winner of the 122nd Boston Marathon was Japanese runner Yuki Kawauchi (2:15:58). Three other Croatians ran the Boston Marathon this year, including Vedran Vučković, Neven Kamenski and Mislav Novoselac.
