Hajduk 2nd in World for Highest Contributions to Total League Attendances by Club

Daniela Rogulj

The Institute for Sports Research (CIES) published an interesting analysis of attendance at football stadiums around the world, which includes an impressive figure by Hajduk Split.

The renowned Institute for Sports Research, better known as CIES, has published an interesting study of football stadium attendance in 51 leagues from 42 countries around the world. For 26 leagues, data was taken over the last 15 years, and for the others in the previous five years, reports Gol.hr on April 10, 2019.

Thus, in 26 football championships, you can see who has progressed the most in the last 15 years. The Polish league has seen a 47% increase over the previous five seasons from 2003 to 2008. The American MLS is ranked second with 34% more fans in attendance, and the third is the 2nd Bundesliga.

In the last five seasons, the most visited league in the world is the Bundesliga with an average of 43,000 fans per game. In second is the Premier League with 36,000, in third is La Liga with 27,000, in fourth is the Mexican championship and in fifth is the Italian Serie A.

The most watched club in the world over the past five years is Borussia Dortmund with around 80,000 fans per match. Manchester United is second with 75,000 on average, followed by Barcelona with 74,000. Bayern is fourth with 73,000, and Real Madrid is in fifth with almost 70,000 fans per game.

But perhaps the most exciting research is the clubs with the highest contributions to total league attendances. While Celtic FC attracted more than a third of spectators in Scottish premier division games, making up 36.5% of all viewers, the second-ranked club is Hajduk Split. Namely, Hajduk accounts for 33.9% of all fans coming to the stadiums in Croatia. Behind Hajduk is Crvena Zvezda, Maribor, Olympiacos, Rapid Wein, and Benfica.

It is well-known that Hajduk has the highest attendance in the Croatian league, which raises the average of the whole league, and the numbers would be even more significant if Hajduk didn’t play four matches in front of empty stands this season.

To conclude, after the Scottish League, Croatia comes in second for contributions by the three most popular clubs to total attendance, by league. Scotland holds 65%, Croatia 64.9%, and Portugal 63.9%.
