The former US Open champion defeated Brazilian Rogerio Dutra Silva 6-4, 7-5, 6-1
Marin Čilić started his US Open tournament sloppily in the first set, losing his serve in the very first game of the match, but managed to perform much better in the later stage of the first set, and won it after the Brazilian saved four set points.
The second set was again a bit bumpy for the Croatian no.1, as he broke the opponent’s serve early in the set, but once again lost his serve in the fifth game of the set. He avoided the tie-break as he broke Silva in the last game.
The third set was finally easier for Čilić, as his game became to look more like his last week performance in Cincinnati which brought him his first Masters title and put him into the ATP top ten players list once again.
Čilić’s next opponent at the US Open will be Ukraine’s Sergiy Stakhovsky.
