Robert Prosinečki scored a historic success on the bench for Azerbaijan after two wins and a draw in the last three qualifying rounds for the World Cup 2018. With seven points, Azerbaijan currently holds second place, potentially making a placement in a play-off for the World Cup in Russia.
After the victory against San Marino and Norway, Azerbaijan took a point in the match against the Czech Republic last night, reports Index.hr.
The Czech Republic dominated most of the match and fired 20 shots at Azerbaijan, but the defence of Azerbaijan had another great match and in the first three games have not conceded a goal. Interestingly, the Czech Republic has not scored a single goal yet.
After the game, the few fans in the stands applauded Azerbaijan and followed Prosinečki and his players onto the field in victory.
It seems now that Azerbaijan are one of the biggest Cinderella stories of the qualifications, but can Prosinečki lead them through?
A few days ago the Azeri surprised Norway with a victory of 1:0 and in recent months, progress under Prosinečki is more obvious. Now the team and Prosinečki face heavy challenges, hosting Northern Ireland on November 11 which is followed by Germany next year.
Germany leads the group with only two points clear of Azerbaijan, and Northern Ireland now lags three points behind Prosinečki’s team.
