Sandra does it again!
The world’s top disc champion, Croatian athlete Sandra Perković has been nominated for the fifth time as the best female athlete of the world in the selection of the International Athletics Federation (IAAF), reports Gol.hr on October 3, 2017.
The IAAF announced ten men and ten women nominees, chosen by an international panel of athletics experts composed of representatives from all six continental areas of the IAAF.
Sandra Perković was nominated among the top ten best after winning the gold at the World Athletics Championships in London and six consecutive victories in the Diamond League.
Perković will compete in the running against the other women nominees who include Almaz Ayana of Ethiopia, Maria Lasitskene of Russia, Hellen Obiri of Kenya, Sally Pearson of Australia, Brittney Reese from the USA, Caster Semenya of South Africa, Ekaterini Stefanidi of Greece, Nafissatou Thiam of Belgium and Anita Wlodarczyk of Poland.
For the best male athlete in the world, the nominees include Mutaz Essa Barshim of Qatar, Pawel Fajdek of Poland, Mohamed Farah of Great Britain, Sam Kendricks from the USA, Elijah Manangoi of Kenya, Luvo Manyonga of South Africa, Omar McLeod of Jamaica, Christian Taylor from USA, Wayde van Niekerk of South Africa, and Johannes Vetter of Germany.
A three-way voting process will determine the finalists.
The IAAF website reads:
“The IAAF Council and the IAAF Family will cast their votes by email, while fans can vote online via the IAAF’s social media platforms. Individual graphics for each nominee will be posted on Facebook and Twitter later this week; a ‘like’ or ‘favourite’ will count as one vote.
The IAAF Council’s vote will count for 50% of the result, while the IAAF Family’s votes and the public votes will each count for 25% of the final result.
Voting closes on 16 October. At the conclusion of the voting process, three men and three women finalists will be announced by the IAAF.
The male and female World Athletes of the Year will be announced live on stage at the IAAF Athletics Awards 2017.”
