Spectacle at San Siro: Rijeka Falls Short Against AC Milan

More than 4,000 Rijeka fans traveled to Milan this week for a spectacle at San Siro stadium.

In the second round of Group D of the European League Championships, Rijeka lost to AC Milan 2:3, reports Goal.hr on September 28, 2017.

It was a wild match between the two clubs who played in front of 23,917 spectators, although our Croatian champions took a while to get their engines started.

The first half was not in favor of Rijeka, and in fact, AC Milan was already up 2:0 shortly after the second half began with goals by Andre Silva in the 14th minute and Mateo Musacchio in the 53rd minute. Milan maintained their lead until the 84th minute – when Rijeka finally found the pep in their step.

In the 85th minute, 26-year-old Ghanaian Maxwell Acosty found the back of the net for Rijeka after a stunning run past the goalkeeper. You can see the goal in the video below.

The game was now 2:1, and not long after, Rijeka found luck again.

In the 90th minute, Rijeka’s Matic Črnic was taken down in Milan’s box, forcing the referee to award Rijeka a penalty. Rijeka’s Josip Elez bravely stepped forward as the penalty taker and flawlessly found the back of the net. The game was now tied 2:2.

An incredible comeback by the Croatian side with just minutes left before the final whistle, the unthinkable happened.

While Rijeka and their fans clinched onto the one point they thought they’d snag from San Siro, Milan’s 19-year-old Patrick Cutrone brought Milan to victory in the fourth minute of added time. The game ended with a shocking finish, 3:2 for Milan.
