US Open: Borna Ćorić Upsets No. 4 Seed!

The US Open is off to a great start for Croatian tennis hopeful Borna Ćorić.

Croatian tennis player Borna Ćorić, who is currently ranked number 61 in the world, made one of the biggest upsets of the first part of the US Open, defeating number 4 seed Alexander Zverev in the second round. The 20-year-old Croat upset the highest ranked of the U-21s, defeating him with 3-6, 7-5, 7-6 (1), 7-6 (4). The match lasted 3.5 hours. 

“I needed this. I was fighting, I gave it my all, it was a very good day,” said Ćorić after the match. Ćorić will face South African Kevin Anderson in the round of 32 tomorrow. Anderson overcame Latvian Ernest Gulbis 6-3, 7-5, 6-4 in the previous round.

In other Croatian US Open news, Marin Čilić defeated Florian Mayer 6-3, 6-3, 6-3, and Donna Vekić overcame Shuai Peng 6-0, 6-2.

Čilić will face Diego Schwartzman in the round of 32 tomorrow. Schwartzman overcame Serbian Janko Tipsarevic with 6-2, 6-4, 7-5 in the previous round.

Donna Vekic will face number 16 seed Anastasija Sevastova who defeated Ukraine’s Catherine Kozlov 6-4, 6-4. 

Unfortunately, Ivo Karlović lost to American Bjorn Fratangelo with 7-6 (2), 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (4), Petra Martić was defeated by the number 10 ranked Agnieszka Radwanska with 6-4, 7-6 (3), while veteran Mirjana Lučić-Baroni was defeated by Carla Suarez Navarro with 4-6, 7-6 (4), 6-2.
