Multiple taxi drivers were intercepted and assaulted following the protest against Uber in Dubrovnik

Earlier today, taxi drivers in Dubrovnik staged a protest against Uber. As a couple of drivers were heading back from the protest, they were stopped and assaulted, reports Index on July 28, 2017.

The perpetrators have not yet been identified, but the taxi drivers from Split stated their colleagues in Dubrovnik had a fight with Uber drivers. They’re claiming the Uber crew intercepted them on the way back from the protest, dragged taxi drivers out of their cars and physically assaulted them. They also claim multiple drivers have been injured.

Another version of the story claims the taxi drivers were beaten by Torcida members. After Index published their first report of the incident, a resident of Dubrovnik reported that Torcida members who attended the Hajduk game in Brondby landed at Dubrovnik airport around 10:30 and headed home to Split. However, as the taxi drivers blocked the road two kilometres from the airport, Torcida allegedly confronted the drivers. Contacted by Index, secretary of Torcida was shocked by the accusation, stating Torcida has nothing to do with the incident.

The third reported version says there was a little girl who got sick while waiting in the queue that was quick to form on the road, so the people got frustrated with the taxi drivers for causing the traffic jam and assaulted them.

The police haven’t yet published an official statement, but sources say they are currently looking for multiple vehicles currently used by the alleged perpetrators.

Index contacted Denis Drašković, one of the assaulted drivers who is currently getting medical treatment in a hospital. “My colleague Boško Dragun was the first in line, and he got stopped by five or six men… They dragged him out of the car and started to hit him. The two of us who were driving behind hurried to help, and they assaulted us as well”, he said. He described them as young men, around 30 years old, who drove away in two vehicles, a Smart car and a minivan.

“Dragun had his leg broken, my colleague Martinović sprained his knee, and I’m waiting in the hospital to find out if my nose is broken. The police came by, we gave them a statement”, said Drašković.
