International experts at the conference in Split stressed the importance of environmental protection and preventing pollution.
‘Adriatic 2017 – Protection of the Adriatic Sea from Ship Pollution’ international conference on the environmental protection of the Adriatic Sea is being held in Split until Friday, reports Poslovni.hr on October 2, 2017.

The conference is organised by the Ministry of the Sea, Transport and Infrastructure. Maja Markovčić Kostelac, State Secretary at the ministry, said that it is extremely important to develop measures of preventing sea pollution, seeing that about 11.5 million tonnes of dangerous cargo are transported each year in Croatian seaports.
“In addition, about 180,000 boats and yachts sail annually in the Adriatic. All these figures call for caution and action to develop preventive measures and an effective reaction in case of pollution, “said Mrakovčić-Kostelac.
At the five-day conference, challenges regarding the fight against the environmental pollution will be discussed, experienced exchanged at EU level among Baltic and Mediterranean countries as well on the national and regional level, sea and maritime issues will be tackled and there will be talks about technical and operational solutions to minimize and reduce the sea pollution. The representative of the Regional Marine Pollution Emergency Response Centre for the Mediterranean Sea (REMPEC), Malek Smaoui, stressed that due to the increase in tourism, greater cooperation between countries in the Mediterranean is needed for the prevention of pollution of the sea.
“Croatia, Slovenia and Italy need to cooperate more closely and effectively in order to protect the Adriatic Sea from pollution,” Smaoui said.
