June the 7th, 2026 – Zagreb is watching as the iconic Vjesnik building enters the history books forever following a fire that engulfed it last year.

The demolition of the former Vjesnik complex has unexpectedly become one of the Croatian capital’s most followed stories, generating huge interest on social media and sparking nostalgia for a building that once symbolised Croatian journalism, publishing and modern Zagreb. While demolition projects rarely capture public attention, the Vjesnik tower is no ordinary building. For many Zagreb locals, it represents an entire era (albeit a sometimes questionable one) of Croatian history.

Located along Slavonska Avenija, the Vjesnik complex was one of the most recognisable office buildings in Zagreb for decades. Built during the Yugoslav era, it became the headquarters of the powerful Vjesnik publishing company, which at its peak produced some of the country’s most influential newspapers and magazines. Its distinctive modernist design made it an instantly recognisable feature of the Zagreb skyline. Despite that, many always found it to be unspeakably unattractive.

For generations of commuters, however they felt about it, seeing the tower was simply part of daily life for many years.

the home of media, political debate and more – far beyond mere architecture

The importance of Vjesnik extended far beyond architecture. For decades, it stood at the centre of Croatian journalism and publishing. Newspapers produced there shaped political debate, informed citizens and chronicled some of the most important moments in Croatian history. During both the Yugoslav period and Croatia’s years of independence, the building remained a symbol of the country’s media landscape. Many journalists, editors and photographers spent entire careers working inside its walls.

consumed by fire and (still) suspicious circumstances

What has surprised many observers is the level of public interest. Videos showing the gradual disappearance of the tower have attracted thousands of views online. Residents regularly stop to take photographs, while local media provide frequent updates on the project’s progress. Part of the fascination comes from the unusual nature of the demolition. Rather than a dramatic implosion, the building is being dismantled piece by piece, allowing people to watch the skyline slowly change over time.

The project has also become highly visible because of its location. Slavonska Avenija is one of Zagreb’s most important roads, meaning thousands of drivers pass the site every day. Recent road closures and traffic restrictions have further increased awareness of the demolition. Even people who had little connection to the building are now paying attention simply because they encounter the project during their daily commute.

Nostalgia plays a major role

For many, the Vjesnik story is generating strong feelings of nostalgia. The Vjesnik tower is associated with a particular period of Zagreb’s development, when the city was expanding rapidly and modern office complexes represented progress and ambition. Its disappearance serves as a reminder of how much the city has changed over the past several decades. Social media has been filled with old photographs and personal memories from people who worked there or simply grew up seeing the building every day.

The future of the site remains a subject of interest. Urban planners, developers and city officials are expected to play a role in determining what eventually replaces one of Zagreb’s most prominent landmarks. Many residents hope the location will continue to serve an important public or commercial purpose. Whatever emerges, it will inevitably be compared with the structure that stood there before.

Cities are constantly evolving, but certain buildings become so familiar that their disappearance feels significant. The Vjesnik tower is one of those buildings.
