Ten Croatian photographers are featured in this year’s edition of the international contest

For the last week or two, all eyes have been on Rovinj: the city first took away the award for the most successful destination for a summer holiday at the Days of Croatian Tourism, then it hosted the Istria Gourmet Festival, a prestigious manifestation that brought Michelin star chefs to this gem of Istrian tourism.

In this week’s art feature, we thought it convenient to focus on Rovinj as well – this time, through the lens of young photographers. The Centre for Visual Arts ‘Batana’ is housing an exhibition titled ‘International Heritage Photographic Experience’, featuring works created by photographers up to 21 years of age who are presenting their own view of the heritage preserved in their homeland.

The project was conceived in 1996 by the Catalan Ministry of Culture; the Croatian Photographic Union joined the initiative two years later. In the last two decades, around four thousand young artists participated in the project with more than 25.000 photographs.

According to Zlata Medak, the head of the programme of the Croatian Photographic Union for the youth, this year’s exhibition features 71 photographers coming from 39 countries and regions worldwide. Since 2015, the international project entails a public tender and a following exhibition of young photographers’ work in each member country.

Medak carried out the selection process for this year’s exhibition that will remain on display for the next two weeks. Those of you who are lucky enough to visit Rovinj these days, while the weather is still pleasant and there’s no shortage of attractive events – make sure to add the Centre for Visual Arts to your itinerary. We could all use a fresh view of the world, and with heritage in focus, we’re definitely up for an inspiring dose of beauty.
