Discover some of the secrets of Croatian tourism in a new book, such as the burning question – Why are there no weddings in Šibenik in May?
In the great hall of the Journalists’ House in Zagreb, Croatian Association of Counties presented its first book – Hidden Gems of Croatian Counties – which on its more than 180 pages presents some of the well-known, but also some of the unknown and interesting pieces of information about cultural, historical and natural features of all Croatian counties on December 7, 2015. The book was edited by an editorial board comprised of representatives of all twenty counties and the City of Zagreb, who have been working on the project for the last eight months. In the book, readers will discover how Lika got its name, which county was the first one to introduce Croatian as its official language, and why there are no weddings in Šibenik in May. They will be able to learn and explore a variety of interesting and extremely valuable gems of information.
In addition to Mayor of Zagreb Milan Bandić who greeted the gathering, speakers at the ceremony included former presidents of the association which brings together all the units of local and regional self-government in Croatia: Primorje-Gorski Kotar County Prefect Zlatko Komadina, Vukovar-Srijem County Prefect Božo Galić, Virovitica-Podravina County Prefect Tomislav Tolušić and Šibenik-Knin County Prefect Goran Pauk.
“Many years have passed since the founding of the Croatian Association of Counties. We started with several interested counties, and today our association brings together all the counties and the City of Zagreb. You have seen our pictures, heard our songs. Each region has its own wonderful features, and when you browse through the book, you realize how beautiful Croatia is. Of course, everyone thinks his or her country is beautiful, but for us Croatia is the most beautiful”, said Zlatko Komadina, founder and the first president of the Croatian Association of Counties.
Goran Pauk, current president of the Croatian Association of Counties, said that the task of the photo book was to demonstrate everything that counties have – beautiful features, areas, regions, and to show that Croatia is a piece of heaven on earth, and that counties have their place in that heaven.
There are plans to publish the book in English next year. For now, you can browse the original edition in an electronic form on the website: www.hrvzz.hr.
