It is one of the jewels of Croatian tourism, but how was life different on Korcula 60 years ago? Wonderful 1960 video of an island at work.
These are boom times for Croatian tourism, and life on the Dalmatian coast and islands has been transformed as a result. Most locals make some kind of income from tourism along the coast, with many getting their primary source of income from the tourism season.
It was not always that way…
Life on Dalmatian islands before the arrival of mass tourism in the 1960s was extremely tough, and locals struggled to get make ends meet. They may have been born into one of the most beautiful places on the planet, but earning a living before tourism was no easy thing.
A wonderful, wonderful old Czech documentary (if you do not understand Czech, worry not – the footage is fantastic) looking at daily life on Korcula in 1960, including several industries which were the most important sources of jobs – the stone quarry on Vrnik, fishing, wine and the fish canning factory of Vela Luka. As well, of course, as a walk through the magical streets of Korcula Town, where little has changed in the last 58 years.
