The candidate for UN Secretary General will meet with the Prime Minister to discuss her candidacy.
Vesna Pusić, the honorary president of HNS and a candidate for the UN Secretary General, revealed in an interview that she would meet with Prime Minister Tihomir Orešković to discuss her candidacy, reports tportal.hr on April 19, 2016.
The candidacy of Vesna Pusić for UN Secretary General has provoked considerable controversy on the Croatian political scene. First Deputy Prime Minister and HDZ president Tomislav Karamarko said recently that Pusić, who was nominated by the previous SDP-led government, would have technical support from the government, but at the same time he added that she was a poor candidate nominated by a poor government.
“I think that is an example of how a Croatian candidacy for an important international post can be used for local political purposes. That is wrong”, said Pusić in the interview.
She added that now many people have started to state their opinions – some of them due to their envy, others out of their weakness, and some because they are always the ones who appear to embarrass the country with their extremist views. And, in this case, that is being used for local political showdowns, said Pusić.
She added that everyone would be better off if, in situations such as this, they would have the strength to come to a common position. “I do not know exactly what it means to have technical support. I presume that the embassies in countries that I visit will provide me with support which is actually part of their job”, said Pusić.
She will have the opportunity to discuss the issue with Prime Minister Tihomir Orešković who during her stay in New York said that she would have the support of the government and that he hoped to sit down and talk with her after she returns to Zagreb.
The meeting has been agreed, confirmed Pusić. “After the meeting, I will be glad to talk about it. For now, we have agreed to meet. I have contacted him and I will go to see him and inform him how it was like in New York, what has happened and what will happen, what are my impressions”, said Pusić. She pointed out that even before she went to New York she said she would be happy to sit down with anyone from the government who was interested in how it looked like and what it was really about.
