The residence of Marshal Marmont at the palace Cindro offers luxury accommodation for guests with high spending power. Instead of offering in-house cuisine, guests receive a card which grants them VIP treatment at the top Split restaurants.
24sata reports that the renovation of the “Residences Marshal Marmont” at the palace Cindro have been ongoing the last seven years. Now complete, the space of 135 square meters near the Peristil in the heart of Diocletian’s Palace has become a luxury accommodation for guests of high spending power. During the high season, a bedroom that was occupied by one of Napoleon’s closest people, costs between 800 and 1000 euros. The salon of the palace will also be up for rent throughout the year for cultural events or for small weddings up to 50 people.
“When General Marmont became the military governor of Dalmatia he mostly stayed in Split. Prof. Frano Boras, the greatest authority on the history of French rule in Dalmatia, testified to us about the history of the space and the existence of a document that was from January, 1808. The Split community made a decision about placing general Marmont in the then elite mansion whose owner was one of the oldest noble families of Split with roots dating back to the 13th century. Although there is no data, comparing the events on the ‘timeline’, it can be assumed that he was staying in the Split residence of Marshal Marmont when he made the final decision on the abolition of the Dubrovnik Republic, which ceased to exist in his decree of 31 January, 1808, for which he was awarded the title of nobility Napoleon Duke of Dubrovnik,” recounts the owner of the space who wanted to maintain anonymity.
When the owner bought the residence 10 years ago he admits it was a mess. The area was divided into 10 small cubicles, and the ceilings, originally a high 35 meters, were lowered to eight feet. Over the original floor they glued several layers of laminate flooring and linoleum. Returning the residence to its original state required a static repair of the walls and floor construction, the restoration of the original ceiling and handcrafted terracotta floor pans.
“The conservators were extremely careful, especially Goran Niksic. For example, in the apartment we found the remains of a fireplace, a replica of the lion’s paws typical of the Italian High Renaissance, and according to the preserved parts of the yard it was stylistically identical to palace Milesi. There’s a piano owned by a famous Cvijeta pl. Cindro, the first trained opera singer in Split,” recounts the owner, adding that the most valuable piece of furniture is a gilded baroque wall bracket from the 17th century, while one wall is adorned by a hand made replica of the famous 19th century Flemish medieval tapestries from the series “The Lady with the Unicorn”. The furniture in the bedroom and stand by the sink is new and made according to the designs of oak from Slavonia.
“This residence does not offer the typical private accommodation because we have restored the space to its original state and eliminated the kitchen that was originally a part of the auxiliary building complex of the palace. This authentic layout was kept, while we protected the value within the interior. Guests are offered a card that provides them with VIP treatment to several excellent restaurants in the city center, but if they want they can also organize catering to the space,” says Maksimilijan Šprung, director of the agency Golden Leaf Properties who manages the real estate and details of the residence offered on site Croatia Holiday Travel.
The room was offered for booking in September this year, and the first guests were a family from India – owners of a chain of super luxury hotels.
“The target audience for Marshal Marmont are guests whom price is a secondary selection in criteria, because at Marshal Marmont, we are talking primarily about the excellent experience, which includes impeccable service,” concludes Špring.
