Croatian Football Stadiums Will See 55,000 Spectators Over Two Days

Four Croatian football clubs will play their critical European league matches today and tomorrow. 

The people of Split were anxious and eager to hear UEFA’s decision on Hajduk’s appeal. Once positive news finally arrived, fans rushed to the ticket shops and waited in long queues for their tickets. The current heatwave threatening Dalmatia would not get in the way of securing Hajduk fans their place at Poljud on Thursday when Hajduk faces Brondby.

Furthermore, Rijeka’s Rujevica has tracked record visits this season, and the stands at Osijek’s City Garden are full as always. Despite the problems facing Croatian football, these three stadiums will see over 55,000 spectators over the next two days, reports Index.hr on August 2, 2017. 

Surely this does not happen often, but this year especially Croatian clubs have shown their quality against European teams – and the big week ahead for Croatian football begins today.

It’s safe to say that no one expected to see four Croatian clubs advance this far into the European competitions, and given the results of their first matches, each club has a good chance of advancing even further.

Croatian champions Rijeka proved that they could handle the current champion of Austria, Red Bull Salzburg, during their first match in Salzburg last Wednesday. A victory at Rujevica for Rijeka would give them the chance to play in the Champions League this fall. 

Dinamo’s 2:1 result against Norway’s Odd from last week’s match at Maksimir should be enough to secure the club through to the Europa League playoffs, providing there are no slip ups in Norway tomorrow night.

Hajduk fans applauded UEFA’s decision on the appeal, and for the first time this season, Hajduk will play to a full Poljud Stadium against Danish Brondby. The first match of the third qualifying round ended 0:0, leaving Thursday’s meeting open territory. One thing we can count on, however, is that Torcida will be preparing a spectacle for the ages.

Osijek served PSV Eindhoven a big blow last week after they defeated the club 1:0 in Eindhoven. Although PSV favors staying in Europa League, Osijek will do their best to achieve one of the great successes of Croatian football.

Rijeka kicks it all off tonight against Red Bull Salzburg at 20:45. Hajduk, Osijek, and Dinamo will play tomorrow.
