We often hear a lot from the government when it comes to emigration, particularly from Slavonia, we’re sometimes lucky enough to hear from the teachers, but when do we ever truly hear from those it affects most?
Meet Luka Haršanji, a 13 year old student. He has been kind enough to write something for us in English!
The start of a new school [year] in most primary schools in Croatia means kids squeal and are full of liveliness, but in the small district school in Kućanci, a village around 10 kilometers far away from Đakovo, during the last few years, there are no crowds. The main reason for that is because only three students attend that school in one combined class – the first, third and fourth grade. What is veryinteresting is the fact that all the students are brothers – Stjepan, Mislav and Leon Patrick Bobinac, as school reporter Luka Haršanji writes for Primary school Drenje.
The small number of students is connected with more and more people and young families leaving the village.
According to Darko Čota, the Principal of the school, 10 years ago they had 21 students in Kućanci, and along with the teacher, Jadranka Novaković, who still works there, there was one more employee who worked in another combined class.
Despite there being less and less students, the school is still working but the future is not bright when we are talking about the possible growth of the future number of students.
