Eight days later, filming in Dubrovnik for Star Wars Episode VIII has ended.
Darth Vader, the Stormtroopers and all the other intergalactic life forms have packed their suitcases, the impressive set that changed the face of Stradun has been dismantled and just like nothing ever happened; life is back to normal in town after filming ended on March 17, 2016. The film crew have concluded production in Dubrovnik after more than a week of using Stradun and many streets in the old town as the backdrop for the follow-up of the heavily anticipated newest film in the series, Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
Stradun, the main street in the old town of Dubrovnik, was completely closed off at night due to intensive filming which apparently included several explosive scenes. Dubrovnik’s famous walls, popular Banje beach (formerly East West), and the boat ”Sea Star” were also used for multiple scenes.
How much Dubrovnik benefited financially from the several days of filming in town is as yet, unknown, although a figure of 5 million euros had been previously mentioned. Around 70% of the work done on set was done by Dubrovnik locals, and approximately 120 businesses (including my own) were compensated for remaining closed during filming.
