Big in Budapest: Petra Martić Advances to Quarterfinals of Hungarian Open!

Croatia’s Petra Martić goes one step further at the WTA tournament in Budapest.

Croatian tennis player Petra Martić has achieved a victory over Belarusian Aliasander Sasnovič, the 47th best tennis player in the world and sixth in the WTA tournament in Budapest, to mark her place in the quarterfinals of the Hungarian Ladies Open. Martić overcame Sasnovič 3:6, 6:4, 6:4, reports Gol.hr on February 21, 2018.

Though the Belarusian was close to the win, Croatia’s 27-year-old tennis star from Duće took the match in a series that almost went to four sets. 

In the decisive set, spectators saw six breaks in the first seven games, and three on each side. Sasnovič came to equalize from 2:4, but Marttić’s new break in the tenth game helped her to achieve her fourth victory over the Belarusian in the same number of matches at the ITF and WTA tournaments.

Croatia’s Petra Martić will play in the quarterfinals against 19-year-old Viktoria Kuzmova (WTA-121) who had a great advantage and opportunity over Romania’s Sorana Cirstea and Germany’s Sabine Lisicki to reach her first quarterfinal at a WTA tournament. 

The Hungarian Ladies Open is a WTA Tour event played in Budapest, Hungary. The international level tournament has been played on hardcourt since 2017 and was reinstated as a WTA International Tournament the same year after being replaced in 2014 with the Bucharest Open. The Hungarian Ladies Open has also been known as the Poli-Farbe Budapest Grand Prix, Gaz de France Grand Prix, GDF Suez Grand Prix, Tippmix Budapest Grand Prix, Colortex Budapest Grand Prix, Westel 900 Budapest Open, Budapest Lotto Open, Budapest Open, Budapest Grand Prix, and Europe Tennis Center Ladies Open, according to Wikipedia.
