Say hello to Speleogobius llorisi! His name is a bit of a mouthful, but the least we can do is try to pronounce it.
Croatia’s beautiful Adriatic sea is teaming with rich marine life, from the abundance of fish we eat to the marine creatures we study, admire and pass laws to protect. Along with the well-known species that walk, or, rather, swim among us, there are some lesser known characters, some rare characters, and some marine residents we didn’t even know about.
As Morski writes on the 14th of June, 2018, During the field exploration of the Natural History Museum of Rijeka, the ”Speleogobius llorisi” fish was discovered for the very first time in the Adriatic sea.
Rijeka’s Natural History Musem published on their Facebook that this fish is one of a series of newly ”written in” (discovered) marine species from the Balearic islands close to the Spanish mainland.
The fish, which have now been found in the Adriatic for the first time during a survey at a depth of 52 metres on the northern shores of the island of Hvar. The recognition of its discovery in the Adriatic will only become ”official” upon the publication and release of an appropriate scientific article, but the museum writes that the unique colours and shape this fish boasts mean that it cannot be any other known fish species.
