An effort has been put forth to clean up the neglected fortress of Gripe, a central part to Split’s survival.
While it’s no surprise to anyone that Gripe is surely dealing with a bit of neglect, it’s important to remember that Gripe is a focal part to Split. Littered with trash and facades that hurt the eyes, it’s only fair to give back some love into such a pertinent part of our city.
The new project “Čista i uređena Tvrđava Gripe“ which translates to “clean up and put in order fortress Gripe” will invite in volunteers and other institutions to take care of the clean up with control conversationists and the Department of Culture.
The first voluntary action will take place after a consultation with stakeholders and a sufficient number of volunteer applications. All political parties, especially those in the City Council, are invited to join this voluntary action, as they have others.
Here is the operational plan for the cleanup inside and outside of Gripe:
1. Distribution of external and internal parts of the fortress to facilitate the organization of work for volunteers.
2. An invitation to the volunteers to come forward in large numbers (at least 50) with the help of GK ŽNJAN, existing institutions in the fortress, the media, and through the City Council.
3. Main tasks for volunteers will be mowing grass and shrubs, removing waste, collecting dry, fallen branches and scattered stones, with filled garbage bags at the entrance to the fortress that will be taken by trash trucks
4. Purchasing basic tools (gloves, disposal bags, rakes, shears …) – Administration of Split.
5. The extraction of grown trees and other plants will be conducted with the assistance and conservationist control.
6. Ask JVP Split and other DVD in Split, HGSS and mountaineering clubs for some complex work on the higher parts of the walls.
7. The City Administration is expected to help with the tools, and the nuresey and trash company will help in mowing grass, waste management and vegetation.
8. The first voluntary action (it may take several) will be held by appointment this Saturday, September 24 from 9h-11h, weather permitting.
