The locomotive and the park in Samobor will finally be renovated.
The train that used to connect Zagreb and Samobor from 1901 until 1979, the legendary Samoborček, i.e. the locomotive located in Samobor, will finally be renovated, Večernji list reports on September 17, 2017.
It was originally meant to be a cargo train, replacing the horse omnibus that connected the two cities and Samobor factories with Zagreb industry, and it was 19 kilometres long (Zagreb-Samobor via Podsused). In the 1950s it was extended to Bregana.

A steam locomotive that is on display in Samobor, but it is in bad shape, so the park where it is located and the locomotive will be renovated thanks to Samobor Museum, Samobor Society of Engineers and Technicians, Rotary Club, the City of Zagreb and Zagreb County. The project documentation is currently being developed and the County has allocated HRK 30,000 for the renovation process.
“The locomotive is located at a distinctive location in the park, and it will be our main guiding principle for the renovation. The idea is to make the train part of the park, as the city’s symbol, not a monument left to decay. We have spoken to children and listen to their thoughts on the park’s renovation, and we came up with the concept while speaking to Bogumil Toni Primary School pupils. All their suggestions will become part of the final solution, and we are preparing a comprehensive project to make the park more family-friendly and safer. Some of the children’s suggestions include smart benches, outdoor library, toys suited for older children, etc.,” the City of Samobor spokesperson said.
The renovation process was initiated by Rotary Club members, and the first step was obtaining the immovable cultural heritage status for the train from the Ministry of Culture.
“The HRK 30,000 will be spent on the project creation and repairing the locomotive’s roof. Some Samobor companies that would like to donate the construction material have already contacted us,” said Rotary Club’s Stjepan Črnjak.
