The Ministry of Tourism, the Croatian National Tourist Board and the Institute of Tourism conduct a survey “Attitudes and Consumption of Tourists in Croatia”.

At the initiative of the Ministry of Tourism and in cooperation with the Croatian National Tourist Board (HTZ), the Institute of Tourism has been conducting a survey “Attitudes and Consumption of Tourists in Croatia”. The research will provide current and detailed information on the profile of visitors coming to Croatia, their motives for arrival, daily consumption, satisfaction, and many other issues. The first results will be presented by the end of this year, and official results will be released by early 2018 at the latest, reports Večernji List on 14 July 2017.

“Croatian tourism has been achieving excellent results and, in order to continue to develop it, it is essential to regularly conduct research in different tourist segments and follow the latest trends. In this study, we wanted to include the segment of tourist consumption as one of the most important indicators of improvement in the quality of tourist offer. This research, which was last done in 2014, will be an extremely valuable and necessary tool for tourism management at all levels, from the destination level to the national level. The survey will include summer months and coastal counties but, considering that more and more tourists are coming to the inland areas, in the future we might expand it to all Croatian counties,” said Tourism Minister Gari Cappelli.

This will be the tenth time that a similar survey is being conducted. The data will be collected directly from tourists in commercial accommodation facilities – hotels, camps and private accommodation facilities – in more than 70 towns on the coast and islands, in the period from June to October. As the only research conducted in all coastal counties in Croatia, this research enables a comparative analysis of the demand in tourist regions.

The primary data collection tool is a structured questionnaire, printed in the Croatian language and eleven foreign languages. Data is collected from visitors by personal interviews, and in 2017 the participants will for the first time also use the CAPI method (computer aided personal interview). The research collects data on the socio-demographic structure of guests, the characteristics of their travel and stay in destinations, consumption, and the satisfaction of guests with the Croatian tourist offer. The survey is conducted on a sample of 5,000 respondents, stratified by county, type of accommodation, and country of origin. The sample ensures the representativeness of the obtained data.

“It is important that the Ministry of Tourism initiates and supports the conduct of research which is a sound basis for guiding the tourism policy. The study reveals the tendencies of our market, as well as our competitive advantages, but also weaknesses,” said Sanda Čorak, director of the Institute of Tourism.
