Marin Čilić advances to the quarter-finals of Wimbledon, again!

Marin Čilić has placed in the quarter-finals of the third Grand Slam tournament of the season, Wimbledon. Unlike in previous years, Čilić accomplished this feat in four clean victories with 3-0 sets. Čilić’s opponent in the quarter-finals will be the 16th ranked Gilles Müller from Luxembourg who eliminated Rafael Nadal 15-13 in the final set. This will be Müller’s first quarter-final at Wimbledon, reports Gol.hr on July 11, 2017.

“It is obvious that he plays well. He is full of confidence and feels good on the court. It will be a difficult match, especially after this marathon with Raf. I think tomorrow (Tuesday) I will not feel the best, but I am confident that on Wednesday I will be ready. I have my physical therapist traveling with me, and I am convinced that will help, especially since we have a day off,” said Müller.

Čilić beat Müller precisely two weeks ago at the Queen’s Club Championships 2-1 in sets and last year at the ATP Rotterdam. In these two matches where five sets were played, Čilić was faced with only two tie-break balls, one of which was saved.

Čilić goes into the quarter-finals of Wimbledon against a tired Müller who is 34 years old – and when looking at their ratio of victories and defeats, 2-0 is a great opportunity for Čilić to place in the semifinals of Wimbledon. As far as Nadal is concerned, Čilić has shown that he can beat anyone in tennis, and before the start of Wimbledon, Čilić, after Roger Federer, was the second favorite to win Wimbledon, even ahead of Andy Murray and Novak Djokovic.

After winning against Roberto Bautista Agut, Marin stressed that consistency in his game is the most important for a good result which can best be seen in his last match and many before that.

Čilić recorded an average of over 46 winners per game and only 21 unforced errors which is an amazing statistic considering his aggressive style of tennis. Anyone who has watched Marin play, especially in his last match against Bautista Agut, will agree that he is playing perhaps the best tennis of his career since the US Open in 2014 when he reached his first, and so far only, Grand Slam title. Back then, Čilić had similar statistics, averaging over 30 unforced errors per match.

The match between Müller and Čilić will be played on Wednesday around 14:00 Croatian time. If he wins, Čilić will play in the semifinals against the winner of the match between defending champion Andy Murray and American Sam Querrey.
