For the first time in his career, Borna Ćorić has advanced to the 4th round of a Grand Slam tournament.
21-year-old Borna Ćorić entered the 4th round of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time after defeating Russian player Daniil Medvedev 6-3, 7-5, 6-2 in the 3rd round, reports Gol.hr on September 1, 2018.
Ćorić was better in the shaky first set where both players made many unforced errors and Medvedev was punished for his very poor serving. In the second set, Ćorić missed serving for the set at 5-4 but immediately succeeded in taking Medvedev’s service once again and took advantage of another opportunity to bring the second set in his favor. When Ćorić made a break for 2-1 in the third set, there was no doubt about who the winner would be.
This was Ćorić’s third victory in his fourth match against Medvedev.
“I was very nervous coming into the match, I’ve lost in the third round many times,” he said. He also said about his Wimbledon loss to Medvedev: “It was a different surface which I didn’t like the most,” he said. “I tried to learn from that match and saw my mistakes and kind of corrected it. I played pretty much a perfect match,” Ćorić said on the official US Open website.
In the 4th round, Ćorić will play against the No.3 player in the world and the winner of the 2009 US Open, Argentinian player Juan Martín Del Potra who defeated Spaniard Fernando Verdasco 7-5, 7-6 (8), 6-3.
Ćorić and Del Potro have not met so far.
Marin Čilić will play in his 3rd round match on Sunday against Alex de Minaur.
