May the 15th, 2026 – Camping in Croatia was once the epitome of cheap tourism, but it seems that those days are over. In certain coastal locations, campsites are now generating more income than hotels.

Camping along the coast and the islands in Croatia was once associated mainly with budget tourism and family holidays. The sector has changed dramatically however, and in some coastal regions, modern campsites are now generating revenues and occupancy levels that rival or even outperform traditional hotel investments.

Across Istria, Kvarner and parts of Dalmatia, many campsites have evolved into high-end tourism complexes with mobile homes, pools, wellness facilities, restaurants and direct beachfront access. Instead of attracting only budget travellers, premium campsites are now targeting families, digital nomads and higher-spending European visitors looking for flexible outdoor accommodation.

Croatia’s camping sector benefits heavily from central European tourism markets, especially Germany, Austria, Slovenia and the Netherlands, where camping culture is deeply established. A great many visitors return to the same Croatian campsites every single year, creating unusually stable repeat demand compared to other tourism segments.

Industry discussions across Croatia increasingly point out that camping guests often stay longer than hotel guests and travel outside the absolute peak season, helping extend tourism activity into spring and autumn.

One of the most marked transformations came through the rise of premium mobile homes. These fancy units allow campsites to charge significantly higher nightly rates while still marketing themselves within the camping sector. In practice, most modern Croatian campsites now operate more like open-air resorts than traditional campgrounds full of tents and sleeping bags.

This has dramatically improved profitability, especially in coastal areas where land values and seasonal demand continue rising.

Croatian tourism companies and international investors have increasingly shifted attention toward campsite expansion and upgrades. Compared to large hotel developments, campsites can often be expanded more flexibly and appeal to a broader mix of travellers. Some analysts in Croatian tourism media now describe premium camping as one of the most resilient and adaptable segments of the Adriatic tourism market.

Croatia is now regularly ranked among Europe’s top camping countries, especially for travellers arriving by car from nearby EU markets.

Its heavily indented, rugged coastline, easy island access and relatively short driving distances from multiple countries across central Europe give it a major structural advantage over more distant Mediterranean competitors. That positioning became even stronger after the end of the coronavirus pandemic, when outdoor accommodation gained popularity across the whole of Europe.

What makes the camping in Croatia story interesting is that it reflects a broader shift in the country’s tourism. For years, the industry focused heavily on hotels, apartments and mass summer arrivals. Now, some of the strongest-performing tourism segments are actually those offering flexibility, outdoor experiences and longer stays rather than traditional package tourism. In other words, Croatia’s tourism future may end up looking less like giant resort development and more like a form of premium open-air living on the Adriatic coast.
