June the 2nd, 2026 – A man has appeared in court and been fined in Cavtat after being detained for walking around in a Ratko Mladić shirt.

A man visiting southern Croatia has been fined after appearing in public in Cavtat wearing clothing displaying symbols associated with criminal forces that attacked Croatia during the Homeland War. The incident, which took place over the weekend in the country’s southernmost town, quickly reignited debate about wartime symbolism, public order and historical sensitivity in one of Croatia’s most symbolic regions.

According to police and court reports cited by Croatian media, a 35-year-old citizen of neighbouring Bosnia and Herzegovina was stopped after walking through central Cavtat wearing a T-shirt featuring insignia linked to the Army of Republika Srpska and Ratko Mladić, a convicted war criminal.

Witnesses reportedly alerted authorities after noticing the shirt, leading police to intervene. The man was subsequently detained and brought before a misdemeanour court.

Court imposes 700 euro fine

The court in Dubrovnik found the man guilty of disturbing public order and peace. He was fined 700 euros, with the ruling citing behaviour that caused distress and public upset among citizens present at the time. The decision attracted widespread attention because of the location of the incident and the symbolism involved.

For many people outside of Croatia and the wider region, the story may appear unusual. However, in southern Croatia in particular, wartime memories remain particularly vivid and traumatising. The wider Dubrovnik region was directly affected by military operations during the Homeland War, including the siege and shelling of Dubrovnik in 1991 and 1992.

As a result, symbols associated with the aggressors who attacked Croatia continue to carry understandably strong emotional and political significance. Many residents view public displays of such insignia as deeply offensive rather than merely historical references.

The fact that the incident occurred in Cavtat made the story even more sensitive. Located just south of Dubrovnik, the town sits in an area where deeply disturbing memories of the war remain especially strong. Many local families experienced displacement, destruction, loss and all kinds of other direct impacts from the conflict. Because of that violent history, it should come as no surprise at all that a man donning a Ratko Mladić shirt anywhere in Croatia generated outrage.

The case quickly spread across social media platforms, where reactions were overwhelmingly critical of the man’s provocative actions. Many commenters argued that visitors should understand the historical context of the places they visit and avoid displaying symbols associated with wartime aggression. Others noted that similar incidents involving extremist or wartime symbols would likely provoke strong reactions in many European countries.

The incident has also prompted discussion about how tourists navigate historical and political sensitivities while travelling. Croatia welcomes millions of international visitors every year, many of whom may not be familiar with the complexities of the conflicts that accompanied the breakup of Yugoslavia.

despite croatia’s incredible progress, the past remains painfully present

Over thirty years after the Homeland War ended with a Croatian victory and independence, the incident serves as a reminder that the legacy of the conflict remains deeply embedded in the public psyche.
