June the 9th, 2026 – Slavonska Avenija, one of Zagreb’s busiest roads, remains closed to traffic indefinitely as the removal of the Vjesnik tower continues causing major disruption.
The busy traffic artery will remain closed “until further notice” following a decision by city authorities and project stakeholders due to ongoing safety concerns linked to works in the Vjesnik zone.
Index reports that this closure affects a key east–west route through the Croatian capital and has already forced drivers onto heavily used alternative roads, with traffic expected to remain under pressure while the situation continues.
According to officials involved in the coordination of works, the decision was made after consultations between contractors, supervisors, engineers, and safety experts. The main concern is a structurally unstable section of the nearby building being dismantled, which authorities say poses a potential risk to traffic below.
Because of this, reopening the underpass or restoring normal traffic flow is not currently considered safe, and no fixed timeline for reopening has been announced.
Instead, the City of Zagreb is reactivating a previously used “bypass” traffic scheme, redirecting vehicles through alternative routes across nearby streets and intersections. Officials have warned that the system is complex and will likely result in congestion, particularly during peak morning and afternoon hours.
Drivers are being urged to use alternative routes where possible and to expect delays as the capital adjusts once again to a restricted traffic layout.
The disruption is part of a wider set of works in the area surrounding the former Vjesnik building, where controlled demolition and structural removal operations have been ongoing for months. The site has required repeated changes to traffic organisation due to shifting safety conditions.
Transport officials say enforcement will be increased at key junctions to prevent drivers from entering restricted zones or making prohibited turns, with police presence expected to remain visible during peak hours.
For Zagreb commuters, Slavonska Avenue’s closure represents yet another major disruption on one of the city’s most important transit corridors, reinforcing long-standing concerns about the resilience of the capital’s road network under large-scale infrastructure interventions.
As of now, authorities have not provided a date for reopening, stating only that the avenue will remain closed until conditions are deemed fully safe.
The situation is expected to remain one of the city’s main traffic pressure points in the coming days.
