Most often the emergence of the old town in Novigrad on Dobra River is placed in the 14th century, when it came into possession of the Frankopan dukes from Krk Island.
It stands above the river and bridge, to oversee and be seen, on a Roman-built route to the sea, later the Karolina road constructed in the 18th century.
It was one of the locations where the Zrinski-Frankopan family plotted to overthrow the Habsburg dynasty, resulting in failure and the beginning of the downfall of the town. After it changed many owners, it was burned by partisans in 1944, while restoration began in 1999.
