July 24, 2018 – It was probably the best-known bench in all Croatia. The end of an era for the wise men known as ‘the island Wikipedia’.
A little piece of Jelsa heritage died today, as The Bench, one of the great symbols of the town and frequented by the wise old men (but never women) of Jelsa, was removed from its prominent position just off the square in front of the mayor’s office.
Know as the island Wikipedia, there was no topic which was not discussed on the bench, from olive-picking tactics to the morning weather. Fountains of knowledge – enough to educate students from 100 universities – have been passed along The Bench over the decades, as the elders of the town came together each day to discuss the weighty topics of the day.
No more.
Out with the old, in with the new, as the location of The Bench has been cleared for the imminent opening of a pizzeria behind it.
It seems The Bench is not in keeping with the new look of the town, as several new benches have appeared on the road below it. It remains to be seen whether or not our celebrated philosophers will take to the new regime, with a pizzeria behind them.
Rather than be sad at the end of an era, let’s celebrate some of the highlights.
Like the time the Czech fashion models did an innovative blood pressure check on Team Wikipedia.
Possibly the only bench in Croatia ever to host an international concert, as Cellar Doors jetted in from California to perform.
Famous bloggers travelled to Jelsa just to take selfies on The Bench.
And when young Mariana from Sydney messaged me and said she wanted to come to Hvar just to sit on The Bench, I knew we had something special.
One of the greatest achievements of my life (and I mean that genuinely) – after just 13 years of living in Jelsa, an invitation from the wise elders to sit on The Bench. I was truly honoured.
One of my favourite Jelsa photos of all time. Rush Hour.
Farewell, The Bench, and thanks for the memories. Let’s see what progress brings.
