Hunters have assured locals that the wolves pose no threat to safety.
Widlife is often much, much closer to us than we realise! Thankfully, experts have stated there is no need to panic about the wolves.
As RTL writes on the 26th of November, 2017, the two wolves were seen in the area of Podkilavac, north of Dražica, in the Jelenje municipality, which is 300 meters above sea level at a height of around 1000 meters, so it isn’t uncommon for wild animals who live in this area to be more exposed to human activity and places where people live, according to the Rijeka based portal rijecanin.rtl.hr.
“In the past fifteen days, we’ve had two bears in the areas of Sobol, Kikovica and the Kukuljani area, who created material damage. The bears are preparing for their winter hibernation and are collecting supplies for their energy. It [the bear] is transitory wild animal, like the wolves, which today, according to the locals, have been seen in Podkilavac, and they seem to be looking for food,” said Boris Zaharija, President at LD (Hunting society) Jelen-Čavle.
It’s possible that the same pair of wolves were seen about a kilometer away from the Grobnik Automotodrom, and as the expert hunters point out, wolves tend to have a large territory and a wide range of movement, so one could be seen today in the Podkilavac area, and tomorrow maybe in the area of Studena or Marčelja.
“In any case, the professional services will go to the field and check the allegations. Tomorrow our gamekeeper (warden) will go to the area himself and try to officially register the animals and take the appropriate measures, and as far as the locals are concerned, there is no danger and we consider it a passing phase,” concluded Zaharija.
