September the 5th, 2024 – The City of Zagreb is set to invest 200 million euros in 80 new trams, with contracts having been officially signed recently.

As Poslovni Dnevnik writes, Zagreb Mayor Tomislav Tomašević stated: “I’m proud to say that the City of Zagreb is signing a contract for an additional 20 trams, in addition to the 20 that are already in production. These trams will be the first new ones on Zagreb’s tracks after a fifteen whole years, and we expect the first ones by the spring of next year. In addition, the City of Zagreb is one of the few cities that produces trams at home thanks to a local manufacturer.” The mayor then congratulated the well known KONČAR for being the best in the international competition.

“We aren’t planning stop there. By the end of the year, ZET will call for a tender for 40 longer low-floor trams, worth around 120 million euros. This will represent a total of 200 million euros of investment from the City of Zagreb in new trams necessary for the improvement of public transport and the better quality and more reliable transport that the people of Zagreb deserve”, said Mayor Tomašević.

The new low-floor trams will be modern, comfortable to use and suitable for people with disabilities and reduced mobility.

“The new trams will have a capacity for 115 passengers, a platform for the entrance of wheelchairs and USB ports for a minimum of 10 seats in the passenger compartment. They will also meet all other international standards,” explained the president of the ZET Management Board, Marko Bogdanović.

The Presidents of the Boards of KONČAR and KONČAR – Electric Vehicles, Gordan Kolak and Josip Ninić, thanked the City of Zagreb and ZET for the long-term cooperation that enables them to be visible on the international scene with these new trams, as well as for ensuring stability in business.

“References and accomplishments on domestic soil are the most important prerequisite for export competitiveness, and KONČAR can confirm this with the example of trams by exporting 14 low-floor trams to Latvia”, emphasised the president of the KONČAR Management Board, Gordan Kolak.

“These new trams, which have become both the City of Zagreb’s symbol and one of the most technically complex Croatian products, are a true example of the synergy between the local community and domestic industry, which we’ll continue to strive for,” stated Josip Ninić, President of the Management Board of KONČAR – Electric Vehicles.

“Projects like this enable us to further develop even more new products, invest in knowledge and development, and enable the employment of expert people from production workers to our designers,” said Josip Ninić, president of Končar – Electric Vehicles, as reported by HRT.
