March 18, 2024 – The Croatia national handball team is placed in the second strongest group for the handball tournament draw at the Olympic Games, where 12 national teams will be divided into two groups. Croatia will learn their fate in Paris after the draw takes place on April 16.

Croatia qualified for the Olympic Games in Paris after winning all three games against Austria, Germany and Algeria at the qualifying tournament in Hanover. Germany secured the Olympic Games from the same qualifying tournament.

Qualifying tournaments were also held in Spain, where Spain and Slovenia qualified for Paris. At the tournament in Hungary, the national teams of Hungary and Norway qualified for the Olympic Games. Norway is also placed in the second strong group of the draw and will not play against Croatia in the group stage.

Strong groups in the draw for the Olympic handball tournament:
Group 1: Denmark / Spain
Group 2: Croatia / Norway
Group 3: Hungary / Germany
Group 4: Slovenia / France
Group 5: Sweden / Egypt
Group 6: Argentina / Japan

Croatia will thus play in the world’s largest exhibition for the sixth time. In five Olympic appearances so far, Croatia has won the gold medal twice (1996, 2004), won bronze once (2012), and finished fourth and fifth. Croatia also failed to qualify for the competition in 2000 in Sydney and 2021 in Tokyo. So far, Croatia has played 37 matches at the Olympic Games, achieved 29 victories and experienced 8 defeats. In doing so, Croatia scored 1043 and conceded 925 goals.

Croatia also has five medals from the World Champs – a gold medal in 2003, three silver medals and a bronze, while they also won three silver medals and a bronze at the European Championships.

The Olympic Games in Paris will be held from July 26 to August 11, 2024. The handball competitions in the first phase are held in the South Paris Arena 6. From the quarter-finals, everything moves to Lille at the Pierre Mauroy Stadium, which can accommodate 50,000 spectators.
