Jazz Up Your Advent: Matija Dedić and Merima Ključo in Opatija

Total Croatia News

Two world-renowned musicians are about to meet in Opatija to present the audience with a special Christmas gift: an unforgettable musical experience

The whole of Croatia is sprinkled with Christmas lights, with Advent programmes in full swing in most cities in the country. The same goes for Opatija, the old dame of Kvarner, whose streets and the Lungomare promenade have donned their festive outfits. The city centre is lined with charming booths packed with hand-made souvenirs, gourmet delicacies and the staple item of the holiday season, mulled wine.

In case you’re planning to visit Opatija for the weekend, why not spice up the Advent experience by attending one of the attractive live music performances the city has prepared? Here’s a suggestion: on Saturday, December 16, the Royal Hall at Hotel Royal will host two acclaimed musicians, Matija Dedić and Merima Ključo.

One of the most renowned piano players and jazz musicians in these parts, Dedić came out with a new album last year and swept the audience and the critics off their feet, taking away no less than five Porin awards. Titled ‘Matija svira Arsena’ (Matija Plays Arsen), the album is mostly composed of Matija’s takes on various popular hits penned by his father, the late Arsen Dedić who’s known as one of the greatest legends in Croatian music history.

The album also features a special guest, Merima Ključo, the acclaimed accordion player known for her sevdalinka pieces – a traditional genre of folk music originating from Bosnia and Herzegovina.

So far, Dedić and Ključo have performed together only once, at the Rector’s Palace in Dubrovnik earlier this year. The upcoming concert in Opatija makes for a rare opportunity to experience the masterful duo playing in unison.

You can get the tickets at a price of 80 kuna on the reception desk of Hotel Continental in Opatija, or by contacting the organisers at 051 278 000 in case you’re not able to personally collect the tickets beforehand.
