No Ferry Connection to Silba from Tomorrow Until June 2020

Lauren Simmonds

As Morski writes on the 3rd of October, 2019, from Friday the 4th of October, 2019 until June the 1st, 2020, the ferry section of the port Silba (Žalić) will be closed for all maritime traffic due to the works on coastal rehabilitation.

According to the information available, this means that there will be no ferry connections for Silba for the next eight months and that the connection to the mainland will be maintained by catamaran lines alone, according to HRT Radio Zadar.

Friday, October the 4th is therefore the last day the ferry will be able to dock at Silba.

More specifically, Jadrolinija has stated that – in accordance with the decision of the Zadar Port Authority, the Port Branch of Silba – the ferry in line 401, Zadar (Gaženica) – Ist – Olib – Silba – Premuda – Mali Lošinj, will not dock at the port of Silba until the intended completion of the aforementioned rehabilitation works.

Davor Škibola, Director of the Zadar County Port Authority stated:

”While the works are in progress, a plan has been made for fast lines to dock in phases as the works are being carried out. Regular passenger traffic will still take place and municipal waste will be taken away. We don’t have a ferry communication solution at the local port so far, so we’ll see if there is still a chance of organising it during construction. The possibility of docking a ferry on the north side of the island has been eliminated

The northern harbour is not an area covered by the County Port Authority. The matter was discussed at a meeting in the county during which all the factors involved in such a decision were discussed and it was concluded that there was no possibility of docking ferries there because of its depth. It would be too dangerous,” he noted.

The Silba Žalić port is being rehabilitated by the Zadar County Port Authority, and all of its existing fortifications, its stone embankment, coastal wall, etc, will be properly and sufficiently rehabilitated.

Sun Adria from Rijeka will perform the works as the winning bidder, while Zadar’s D&Z will provide expert supervision. The project is being carried out by the Zadar County Port Authority and is co-financed by the Ministry of Maritime Affairs, Transport and Infrastructure.

The value of the said works stands at 10 million kuna, VAT included, and the estimated duration of the works is eight months from the date of their introduction to final operation, Radio Zadar reports.
